Thanks to funding from MWCD, Ashland SWCD is able to assist producers within the jurisdictional boundaries of MWCD to implement cover crops on their operations. Approved producers who have not participated in the program previosly will receive a $15/acre cost share; returning producers will receive a $12/acre cost share. In 2018, over 4,000 acres of cropland in Ashland County were approved for cover crop cost share. Applications are ranked based on criteria such as location behind an MWCD lake or dam, slope, past participation in the program and primary crop. Locally, the Ashland SWCD supervisors chose to award additional points to producers who use aerial, broadcast, or no-till planting and who plant an overwintering cover crop. There is a 200 acre cap for cost-share participation, with the exception being any acres in the watershed of Pleasant Hill or Charles Mills are automatically approved with no cap. The 2019 application deadline is July 3, 2019. For more information, contact District Technician Erica White at 419-281-7645.
