Take Flight with Pollinators this July

When it comes to local interest in conservation projects, one of the most popular topics to talk about in Ashland County is creating pollinator and bird habitat. That’s why Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be hosting a Winging It Conservation Chat in July.

The chat will take place at the Heath White farm at 1399 US 224, Greenwich on July 8 at 6 p.m. and will focus on the many benefits pollinators and birds can provide to the local landscape and ecosystem.

“Pollinators and birds are great ambassadors for conservation,” said Jane Houin, Ashland SWCD director. “And no matter whether you live in the country or downtown, pollinator and birds seem to capture everyone’s interest, and they great thing is there are things everyone can do to help protect and enhance habitat for our winged friends.”

The Winging It! Conservation Chat will be the 2nd chat hosted at his farm featuring pollinator habitat.

One of the highlights of the event will be a guided tour of the farm, where White has worked hard to establish pollinator and bird habitat. The tour will be an opportunity for White to share the ups and downs he’s faced in developing pollinator habitat as well as to inspire others to create habitats that fit their own landscapes.

As part of that goal, Denise Ellsworth from the Ohio State University will share information about the benefits of pollinator habitat in the landscape and will also be providing hands-on tips for those interested in developing and establishing pollinator habitat on their own properties.

Abby Prieur from Pheasants Forever will also share opportunities for creating upload bird habitats in the landscape and the benefits that can provide. Jason Ruhl from the Natural Resources Conservation Service will also be on hand to talk about pollinator cost-share opportunities available through NRCS for habitat maintenance and establishment.

Tickets for individual events are $5 and include a light meal, or participants can purchase come with a friend and get both tickets for free.
