Reel in Fun at Something Fishy event with Ashland SWCD and Ashland Park District
There’s no better way to spend a summer day with the family than casting a line and reeling in a fish. These outdoor experiences not only create lasting memories, but they also help build confidence in kids and teach them valuable life skills.
That’s why the Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is teaming up with the Ashland County Park District, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and Rural Action to present the Something Fishy Conservation Chat—a fun, hands-on fishing event for kids and families. The event will take place on August 9 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Tom Kruse Wildlife Conservation Park, located at 748 County Road 1754, Ashland.
“We’re fortunate to have such an abundance of water resources here in Ashland County, from lakes and ponds to our vast river system,” said Jane Houin, Ashland SWCD Administrator. “Our goal is to inspire a love and respect for these resources in young people. The Something Fishy Conservation Chat is a fantastic way for kids to get outdoors, learn about nature, and maybe even discover a lifelong hobby.”
The event is open to youth ages 18 and under, and features free fishing with volunteers available to assist. Participants are welcome to bring their own fishing poles, but poles and bait will also be provided.
ODNR staff will lead introductory fishing demonstrations at 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., while Mary Meixner from the Park District will discuss aquatic habitats and water quality at 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.. In addition, Ryan Gilliom from Rural Action will offer a hands-on activity for kids throughout the event.
Goodie bags and snacks will be available for the first 50 youth who pre-register. Participation is free, but pre-registration is required. To register, visit somethingfishy.eventbrite.com.
