Plan Now to Prevent Spring Fish Kills
Everyone loves a good fish dinner, and it somehow tastes even better if you’ve caught the fish yourself. And while you won’t be able to actually catch your own fish that evening, Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be offering fish dinners as part of their November Conservation Chat: Prep Your Pond.
“Pond owners may not be thinking right now about what they need to do to help prepare their ponds for a great summer of fishing next summer, but fall is actually a great time to take some preventative steps to get your pond prepared for a successful spring and summer next year,” said Jane Houin, Ashland SWCD director.
The Conservation Chat: Prep Your Pond will take place at the Ashland Wildlife Conservation League on County Road 1035. The chat is free, but participants will have the opportunity to pre-order a fish dinner from Exclusively Yours Catering to enjoy during the workshop.
Steve Fender of Fender’s Fish Hatchery in Baltic will be the featured speaker, and he will be sharing best management practices to take this fall to help your fish population survive the winter and emerge healthy this spring.
“Steve is a great resource for local pond owners,” Houin said. “He literally wrote the book on Pond Management, and he offers a real wealth of hands-on knowledge and information to share with pond owners.”
Fender’s book is available through the Ashland SWCD fall fish stocking sale and will also be available to purchase at the Conservation Chat. Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged. Participation in the Conservation Chat itself is free, but pre-payment and pre-registration are required to ensure a fish dinner is available for participants. Guests are also welcome to purchase a fish dinner for pickup without staying for the Conservation Chat as well. Registrations can be made by calling the SWCD office at 419-281-7645.
The Prep Your Pond Conservation Chat will be start at 6 p.m. and the Ashland Wildlife Conservation League at 1930 County Road 1035.
