Don’t Get Stumped by Tree Care and Maintenance

Don’t let your tree care woes “leaf” you stumped; join Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District at the Hazel Willis Woods on November 1 to an in depth talk with the experts to answer common tree care maintenance questions.

The Don’t Get Stumped Conservation Chat, part three in a three-part habitat stewardship series, will take place on Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at the district’s Hazel Willis Woods outdoor learning laboratory near Mifflin.

“Although this is the thir session in our series, each event is designed to stand on its own and provide unique, valuable insights,” said Holly Hale, Natural Resources Assistant at Ashland SWCD. “We’re excited to offer opportunities for community members to learn more about tree care, all the way from selecting the proper site to plant the tree to preventative maintenance to harvest..”

2025 Ashland SWCD Volunteer of the Year Tim Lavey leads a wildflower walk at the Hazel Willis Woods earlier this summer.

The Don’t Get Stumped event will feature presentations from local experts on two key topics:

  • Dennis Mohn, a Master Gardener volunteer, will review proper site selection for tree planting, how to prepare a site, soil testing and drainage concerns to make sure your new trees get growing on the right foot (or root as the case may be)..

  • Joseph Moeglin will discuss the importance of preventative maintenance and tree care to prevent decline and reduce the risks for individual trees and the urban forest.

Hale will also highlight volunteer opportunities including invasive plant removal projects and educational outreach programs, and participants will get to enjoy the fantastic fall decor still on display from the SWCD’s Not So Spooky Forest event taking place throughout the month of October in the Hazel Willis Woods. The Conservation Chat series kicked off in June with a focus on native plants and wildflowers. The second event in the series, Branching Out, took place in September and covered and focused on invasive plants and pollinator habitat.

Tickets are $10 and include a light breakfast. Register online at habitatsteward3of3.eventbrite.com. For more information, visit the Ashland SWCD office at 110 Cottage Street, Ashland, or call 419-281-7645.
